Read More

Original here: Career Tip: The first 2 minutes of a job interview can be the most important | LinkedIn.
Many career professionals believe that interviewers make up their minds whether or not to hire a job seeker within the first couple minutes of an interview. The remainder of the time is spent justifying that decision. Therefore, it is extremely important that a person prepare in advance to make their best first impression. This is relatively easy to do, since the first two minutes are predictable. They are where:* the interviewer and job seeker see each other for the first time* they greet each other* and the first question/request is asked/made and answeredToday’s article focuses on that first question/request, which is usually, “Tell me about yourself.” This is such a broad question that many people do not know how to respond. They discuss their families, their background, their interests. However, that is not usually what the interviewer means. In most instances, the question could be rephrased: “Tell me about how you can be of service to the company and me.” Those who prepare can use this as an opportunity to present their value proposition and resulting accomplishments in a way that interviewers can relate to in their own situation. To do so, grabs their attention and reaches them on both a mental and emotional level. For example, there is a woman named “Martha,” who wants to be an event planner. Her work experience is limited to two years at a discount store where she was promoted to department manager after six months. She has staffed at a few events as a volunteer. However, all her experiences around event planning were personal, such as organizing family birthday parties, vacations, and one very successful moving sale. How could “Martha” respond to the request to: “Tell me about yourself,” in a way that would show an event planning business that she is the perfect fit for their assistant event planning position? And how could she say it in under one minute? Here is one possibility:“When people want a job done right the first time, they come to me. Not because I know how to do everything, but because I have the ability to develop and lead teams that do. For instance, I was tasked with managing a moving sale, but had never even been to a yard sale. With less than a week to prepare, I put together a team to assist with the marketing, pricing, and customer service. When the doors opened, there was a line down the driveway and into the street. By the time the doors closed, we had earned 200% above projections.”What information did “Martha” provide the interviewer that shows she could be of great value in the position of assistant event planner? A great deal, some of it directly, some implied. “Martha” can:* organize an event* work through any fears regarding tackling a project that is completely unfamiliar* manage teams, time, and things* work to a tight schedule (therefore, under stress)* exceed revenue projections (make the company money)Does it matter that this situation was personal, rather than professional? (In reality, a moving sale is a very short-term business.) The response gives the interviewer a reason to believe that “Martha” is capable of fulfilling the position of assistant event planner. It opens up avenues for discussion whereby the interviewer can learn more about “Martha’s” abilities and how she can be of service to the company. And it gives “Martha” a reference point by which she can illustrate further how she can be of service to the company.Copyright © 2010 by Lynne Cogan
